Merry Christmas!

Dear Parents,
I will probably see many of you tonight at the Fine Arts Festival, and I will be meeting the kids at the rink tomorrow for skating, but in case I don't see you, I wanted to send this message.

First, it has been a very fun week with your kids. There have been good spirits and a postive attitude in the class. Today we looked carefully at the gift book Lynn Ray, an artist, gave to each student in the school. We also hosted our grade 2 buddies to watch the original Dr. Suess classic, The Grinch that Stole Christmas, which they have been studying as a class. Fun! I sent home a Christmas mug with some goodies in it with each student, and they were very appreciative and excited.

Thank you to those who very kindly sent in Christmas gifts. I had told the kids that the gifts to the women at Kate Booth House were to replace anything families usually give to teachers, but I realize often kids really do like to bring something for the teacher. Thank you most of all for the encouraging words on your cards !

I wish you and your family a wonder-full Christmas!

Love,
Loree Newman

Mrs.Newman Wednesday 8th

Dear Parents,

We tied for first place in the gingerbread village competition. Well done. The village will be on display Thursday evening at the Fine Arts Festival.
I noticed with the help of a student that sometimes the attendance on the report cards was not correct. There were two columns labeled absences and one had a small % sign I did not notice. I have corrected the attendance on all report cards and the second term you will get the corrected version. Sorry about the mistake!
By now you should all have received the report cards in the mail. The honour roll was published in the weekly update, which you now receive by e-mail.

Mrs. Newman Thursday 2

Dear Parents,
The regularity of a teacher's blog is inversely proportional to her busyness! Sorry about the long silence!

Thank you to all of you who sent in gifts for the women Kate Booth House is sheltering. We had a big bin of all sorts of kinds of special things. They went out with the grade 3 gifts for children and the center pieces and the man who came to pick them up had a big smile on his face and wished you all a very blessed and merry Christmas!

As far as the student council gingerbread house project goes, they will be giving the class 4 kits on Monday for those students who can't make one at home for whatever reason. Students should keep the candy they bring in to decorate to a reasonable amount, so as not to waste too much money. It is not likely that these creations will be eaten as many hands will be handling things. Students will be allowed to spend Monday afternoon on a combination of flex block and gingerbread village work. If any of you love making gingerbread houses or are experienced and would like to help groups of kids, please feel more than free to join us. I've never made one in my life. We will be decorating the grounds around the structures/ houses/buildings students make.

You should be getting your child's report card in the mail. In order to encourage students to begin to think of report cards as feedback for them, I gave them the option of seeing the progress reports privately with me. For most that calmed fears, and for a few prepared them for what will arrive in the mail.

Off campus lunch today went so well. We received compliments on our students' behaviour and they all thoroughly enjoyed themselves. We really hope those few students who did not make enough points this time will do so next time. We have raised the bar, however, to an 80%. Please notes that the HACE mark on the report card includes the points for responsible handling of their job as a student, their use of flex block time, their care with student planners, their contribution to the class with their class job, and their work for Mr. Cavey.

We are now in to term two!
