Mrs. Newman Tuesday's post

Nothing much new to add today, except a few more names for missing work. Portfolios, filled in booklets, and signed forms due back tomorrow.

Dear Parents,
Your children all brought home their portfolios by today (I had asked they go home on Thursday, but had a few stragglers). They are due back on Wednesday, so please have a 20 to 30 minute time to go over the portfolios before then. The kids have a handout that explains how to go about this meeting and we have gone over it together, so they should know what to do. Briefly, you go over their self assessment with them, celebrate the work that was well done, listen to their plans to improve work that was not well done, and together come up with some key goals for them to work on, including a specific action plan for each. They have had time to brainstorm some possible goals already. There is a green form for you to fill in and sign that also gives you a chance to write any comments or questions you have. I gave the kids an agenda to put in their portfolios of what our meeting on Saturday will look like. I hope this helps. See you Saturday!

Thursday, Jan. 6 Mrs. Newman

Dear Parents,
You will be receiving or have received in the mail a letter explaining a bit about the Parent Student Teacher Conferences. The back of the letter has a schedule for your time slot during the day. This just means you come sometime during that time period, not that you stay that whole time! (Hopefully!!!!) We do want to spread you all out during the day so that nobody has a big wait time. Thus, I sent home today a copy of that same letter with your child, with an amendment page as well. I need to change the general times blocks slightly since I have a large number of students who have a surname that starts with a letter in the last half of the alphabet. The way things were originally planned, too many of you would be coming in the morning. It would be helpful to me if you look on the amended schedule at the block of time you are tentatively slotted into and let me know if that won't work for you and your child. Please let me know what blocks of time would work. If you absolutely can't come on Saturday, please let me know that as well. Finally, if you are completely flexible and willing to come any of the time blocks or some other time blocks, that would also be helpful information, in case I need to make other switches. Could you either send back the page I sent home with your comments or e-mail at lnewman@vancouverchristian.org? I will then send home a final revised schedule. :)

NOTE: You should also have completed your self-evaluation about your Math progress this year for my class and Mrs. Dyck's, and this should be in your portfolio. You listed items you are proud of and identified what you did to lead to success. You also listed work you know you could have done much better and listed ideas that would have helped you improve your score. Some things that contribute to math success include:
  • listening carefully in class
  • completing all homework carefully
  • asking for help with questions you are unsure of
  • asking for extra practice if you feel you need it
  • correcting homework mistakes carefully when we take things up in class
  • making questions you found difficult for homework stand out so you know to review them before tests
  • reviewing carefully for tests
  • working slowly and carefully on tests
  • checking over your work on tests,
  • reading questions carefully
  • ensuring you know your basic times table facts well
  • showing your work carefully
  • taking advantage of retest opportunities... and I am sure you can think of other things as well.

Wed. Jan 5 Mrs. Newman

Dear Parents,
Happy New Year! We're back to work and the tone in the classroom is productive.

The students have just started today preparing their portfolios to bring home to you at the end of next week. These portfolios will contain samples of work they are very proud of as well as work they know they could have done much better on. There will also be a booklet which guides the students through all sorts of self-evaluation and some goal making processes. All of this is in preparation for our parent student teacher conferences on Saturday, January 22nd.

Mrs. DeBoer and I are trying to feel out whether students and parents would like to restart the basket of fresh fruit, along with vegees and dip for students to snack on during the day. It may be that most of you prefer just to send snacks for your own child in their lunch kit. But if you like the idea of an attractive and enticing basket of healthy options to encourage snacking that is healthy, please fill out the form sent home to let us know, and return it tomorrow.
