Wednesday evening

I forgot to let you know how touched the staff of Kate Booth House were on Monday when they came to pick up the center pieces and gifts. They are overwhelmed by our decision to care for women and children we have never met and probably never will. I had one of my students tell me how his mom took about an hour to pick out a beautiful scarf and matching earrings. She wanted them to be just right! We prayed that the right gifts would be given to the right woman or child and that Jesus' love would be felt in the gifts you sent. Mrs. DeBoer also had a chance to pray with the staff member who came downstairs and I know you and your children were mentioned before God in those prayers. Thank you so much!!!

Mrs. Newman Wednesday

Dear Parents,
It takes me quite a while to update the blog where I keep everything from the past and change it to add new things or take completed items away. I am going to experiment and try just putting new things on the blog. You would need to scroll back to look at past days if you happened not to look at them. I will also try to do this at about 3:30 from here on in, even if I am working with students after school.

It was such a fun day today and your kids so enjoyed going off campus. I got compliments on the group that was traveling with me, and it was a pleasure to go with them.

Dec. 1 Reading Goal (Then read 15 to 20 minutes 5x a week, and record information on your booklist.)
Dec. 1 Signed Math test
Dec. 1 Math clinic for those needing to do a retest in the near future
Dec. 2 Greece Map
Mon. Dec. 5 No flex block; instead we're doing our Alpha Review Bingo game
Wed. Dec. 7 Alpha test on "Why did Jesus have to die?" and "How can I be sure of my faith?"

Students should be reviewing Alpha using their study cards and Bingo sheets over the course of the next week.

Thursday, Mrs. Newman

Dear Parents,
My goodness, were the kids ever excited to meet and hear a professional athlete who tries to live out his faith in his work! (Well, I think they were most impressed with the professional athlete part.)

Just a reminder that the gifts for the women of Kate Booth House are due for Monday. (They are being picked up on Tuesday.) Special appreciation goes to Benny's mom who sent in 22 beautiful little gift boxes with a crystal or ceramic bracelet in each!!!!!! I know the Salvation Army staff at Kate Booth House are touched and encouraged by our support, and it is our hope that the women who receive them will also be touched by the love of Christ, given by you and your children.

I have been working on report cards Friday and again today and am really enjoying thinking about each one of my students carefully. Because we are trying to transition our students to begin to take responsibility for their own learning, I will be showing them their progress report cards (not comments) on Monday, IF THEY WISH. They see them for a few minutes one at time at my desk and will not be looking at each others. I will instruct them not to pester each other for information.

I have included below an explanation of what the effort numbers mean (1-4) as well as a description of what the personal and social development and work habits listed at the bottom of the report card are supposed to mean. The students have already filled out a sample report card with what they expect their grades to be and what scores they would give themselves for effort and for these descriptors. It is good to see how well most of your children know themselves and how capable they are of honest self -evalutation. I will put these in their portfolios that you will receive in January in preparation for our parent student teacher conferences.

Thanks to Lauren and her parents for the juice and cookies and the tray of grapes, persimmons, and tiny mandarin oranges. Thanks for the time you took in preparing the fruit so it was enticing and easy to eat. The kids loved the cookies, too!

HACE:
Off-campus lunch permission slips will be given on Monday for those who qualify.

Also, I marked planners. We will talk about term 2 planner expectations on Monday. Those of you who would like to continue signing planners each day have my full support. Kids know we consider something important if we "inspect what we expect". But if you would like to back off this term and pick a time once a week to glance over the planner to see it is being filled in and to initial that you have done so, that is fine with me too. Monday, Tuesday or the weekend would be good days to do this, and I will try to sign planners myself on Wednesday and Thursday when I have the students at the end of the day. We are trying to instill the habit of using a planner while school demands are still pretty simple so that by the time they have many more things to juggle, that habit and skill is second nature. It would be great if you showed them your day-timer, calendar, or on-line organizer you use to remind you of important commitments. Best if they" just happen" to see you using yours.

**Monday, Nov. 28 Complete second practice math test for division
