There is no new homework for me to add to yesterday's posting. We had a good time at Robson Square this morning. It was nice to see how downtown is getting all decorated up for the Olympics. Have a great weekend.

A QUICK NOTE TO PARENTS:
The portfolios were supposed to go home today. I have asked the students to book a 20-30 minute appointment with you to be completed before our conference day. They have an "agenda" they are supposed to follow for your meeting. They are to show you the work samples they have collected, highlighting what they are proud of and what they did to achieve that success. They will also have some samples of work they know they could have done much better, and they should have some clear suggestions written down of what they would do next time to improve. They will also show you how they rated themselves in their work habits and social habits. They should have recorded a list of strengths they are noticing about themselves. I asked them to ask you for ideas of strengths you have noticed that they haven't. They also have brainstormed a list of goals they could work on this year and in the future. I asked them to pick their top few (about 3) to work on first. There is a page at the end of the booklet for you to write out the final decision as to the first goals to be worked on, and any concerns either of you have that you want to remember to discuss with me at the conference. The purpose of your appointment together is for you both to bounce ideas off each other to get ready for the conference. Feel free to give lots of praise for things that are really well done and to be impressed at their insight as to what they can do better. Some have been very thoughtful. Some might need the discussion time with you to complete their self-evaluation to a higher standard. Their instruction page also outlines what the actual conference will entail, if you would like to see that ahead of time. I hope all this helps make the whole process productive and meaningful for you and your child.

A QUICK NOTE TO PARENTS:
We've been steadily working on portfolios in preparation for parent teacher student conferences. These should come home to you on Wednesday, all going well. The work can stay home, but the evalution/reflection booklet and folder need to come back, preferably before the conferences but if that is not possible at the conference. They will serve to guide our discussion. I am also grading the thoughtfulness and effort of your child's self-evaluation for HACE. I will be going over with the students what their meeting with you should look like and what the conference will be like. I'll ask them to include that explanation in their portfolio. The whole process is to help them become more aware of their strengths and of the practical things they can do to grow and improve. We are trying to encourage them to start taking ownership of their own education.

A QUICK NOTE TO PARENTS:
Students may well begin feeling like the work is getting quite busy right soon. This is the key productive time in the school year where we need to accomplish a lot. Students need to be more intentional, organized, and determined over the next six weeks or so until the end of term 2. Please let me know if your child is working diligently each night for about an hour and still cannot keep up; then I may need to scale back. We are trying to use class time very productively, and I will be working on encouraging that efficient use of time. I have been pleased at the way they settled into a workman-like attitude quickly after Christmas holidays.
Students are also in the process of doing some self-evaluation and setting some appropriate goals for themselves in preparation for the parent student teacher meeting at the end of the month.

A QUICK NOTE TO PARENTS:
You will be receiving a letter in the mail about our upcoming parent student teacher conferences on Saturday, Jan. 30. I need to be here all day on that Saturday and so am hoping that nearly all of you can come that day. If that day absolutely won't work for you, let me know by e-mail or a note with your child and we will try to arrange a conference sometime the week before that Saturday. The letter also gives you an assigned block of time. I can fit 6 visits in each time block. Right now I have 5 assigned for 8:30-10:00 (Q-Z), 6 for session 2 10:15-11:45 (A-D), 6 for session 3 12:45-2:15(E-K), and 3 for the last session 2:30 - 4:00. If you would like to come in another time slot, please let me know and we will try to shift folks around .
Just a heads up that I will be looking to book a field trip for my class to Stave Lake Powerhouse fairly soon. It is about a 50 minute drive toward Mission. I am hoping to do the trip with parent drivers. It is a fascinating museum. Details to follow as soon as I know the date.

A QUICK NOTE TO PARENTS:
A very happy New Year to you. Thank you so much for the kind cards, well-wishes and gifts sent in before Christmas! I had a wonderful holiday extending hospitality to family, friends, neighbours, and church family over the last two weeks...lots of time in the kitchen and around our table with many guests. I love Christmas!!! But it is good to be "back in the saddle" again today.

MATH:
I handed back the algebra tests today and took it up. Students were to write corrections as I did them on the overhead. A majority of students "got" algebra and did very well indeed! A few struggled with this new way of thinking and showing work. The topic will be taught again in grade 7 at a very similar difficulty level, so those who felt confused this time should not be discouraged. It will probably click next year when the whole process is not so new. However, if anyone is disappointed in his or her mark, I would be happy to give some after school tutoring and then a chance to try a retest. The retest will be offered next week, after school on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday.
